Howdy anons, does anyone have experience with bringing a bicycle on a plane when there is no land crossing available? Does one disassemble it and store it in a box as luggage?

If you go to a bike shop at the right time they will give you a cardboard box, often, filled with packing doodads and bubble wrap and stuff

cos they get all those things all the time when they get new bikes in and routinely toss them

often you just have to remove the front wheel, seatpost, and the handlebars.

i like to bring my seatpost and front derailer in cabin luggage for safe keeping and the rest in the box in the hold

I have a friend who used to travel a lot with his bike, he'd remove both wheels and wrap everything together with plastic wrap. sometimes it would go through as regular luggage, other times he'd be charged extra for oversized luggage, it really depends on the airline you get (and the actual plane)
as other anons mentioned you might want to remove the most delicate bits

Nice, thank you Anon for that insight. Do you mean he could bring the wheels onto board as cabin luggage? Sounds intriguing - I would likely just have two panniers/saddle bags and bring them aboard and was thinking to tilte the handlebar by 90 degrees horizontally so as to allow alignment in the box, wonder if the wheels could stay on.. deflate tyres due to pressure?

Go to a thrift store and get the biggest piece of luggage you can find. It needs to fit the frame. The fork, rear derailleur, and cranks all come off with a 5mm, 10mm hex, a crank puller and, two 5/8 wrenches.
Or they also sell luggage made for bikes

no, he put one wheel on each side of the frame and wrapped everything together

I just tried this. I got an adjustable tv moving box that seemed very sturdy and the bicycle passed well into it. Unfortunately I didnt think to check the prices of transporting my bicycle; Delta wanted 200+ USD and Air France 300+. This was too much for me. I see now that Lufthansa will do it for less.

maybe get a smaller box and maybe you pay an oversize fee, but what, 200-300? really?
