Good weather and greenery make up for a lot. The grimmest parts of my city in winter suddenly become incredibly pleasant when the greenery blooms.

Hell I remember growing us a kid watching gangsta rap videos and being perplexed at why basketball americans on the west coast were whining about their hard ghetto lives. South Central looked like a fantastic place to live.

Have you never heard the term 'pedestrian mall'? (Pic related, Virginia.)
Usually it will have the name of the city attached to it, but people who live there will just say 'the mall', 'downtown mall', etc. Who knows what they're called in Europe (plaza? Ye Olde Shopping Centre?).

Boulevard is a wide street w/ divided traffic, and almost always a strip of trees down the middle. That's not what California guy was referring to.

The majority of those streets look tree lined to me. That's the part of the city you actually see/walk through. The courtyards are private and maintained by the building management or maybe the tenants if they're lucky.
I do agree that it is pretty dense with hardly any park space in shot. Lord knows where you're supposed to walk your dog.

All courtyards were supposed to be gardens in style of Roman peristylium. But theory got hit by reality hard. People of communal courtyard didn't want to support these gardens. What worked for private 1-2 stories Roman mansion maintained by slaves failed for communal court surrounded by 5 story commieblocks for proles.

Also size of the grid and layout was designed for transportation designed around horse drawn trams and foot traffic (it was 1860), But car tech made its all outdated.
