What is it with megalomanic urban planners and always envisioning gargantuan, hostile residential towers separated by so much land that it ruins all walkability? Why do they hate smaller buildings spaced closer together so much?

This is actually nice layout. Complete separation of car and pedestrian., You can put very escoots lanes on teh top level and they would be safe from car traffic. Car traffic on the other hand can move much faster not impeded by need to give way fro pedestrians on crossing.
Rectangular blocks of buildings are ugly of course. Need more more form variations and embellishment.

the problem with these types of spaces is not structural, it's cultural. People who grew up with privacy value it much more. If you're okay with people yelling at each other across the space, and okay with noise, light, and other things that other people are doing, then it's great. Make it a little market, do community events and have community dinners. Have holidays several times a month, whatever. Countries that have these communal spaces started out with communal living as the most efficient design, like town squares and open markets, but it's not required anymore other than culturally. Urban dwellers don't want noise or crazy [poor] neighbors but want convenience and privacy, rural dwellers want convenience but also terabit data and nice views far away from others. New communal development complexes fail (or get associated with the poor) half the time because culture isn't taken into account, only presumed convenience.
I'm aware this is a hotel and have stayed in ones like it, but the novelty wears off. Residential areas should be kept from communal areas with clear distinctions, indoors or not.

I feel that's a lot of /n/ in a nutshell. Talking about how "efficient" packed trains are makes a lot of sense if you're talking about numbers or simulated "agents" who have no lives other than to go to work and back, and are surprised to find that real life doesn't work that way and there's pushback.

Combine this with sociopaths that really do start rubbing their hands about coming up with ideas to force people to ride mass transit (unironic "you WILL eat the bugs" types) and you start to create an echo chamber that can't accept other points of view.
