>>1751142The first one - a company building them wanted to show off their aptitude at rebuilding ( it was 10 years ago ) so they modernized an M62 by pretty much rebuilding it from the frame upwards and installed a new Caterpillar engine on top, because the original is known as a gas-guzzler.
Pic is their newest offering - 6 axle freight loco with 50 units already sold. So I guess they have proven their point.
The second one - the company owning them had a surplus of M62s and and a need for something more powerful. So they ripped the engine and installed electric components, increasing power from 1600kW to 2400kW per loco.
>>1751103>GE/EMD road units absolutely suck ass for locals,Honest question - why?
>>1750781>hat unit doesn't have it, but the new GE locomotives with the ability to take weight off one axle on each truck or whatever for more adhesion on the other 4 has got to be a meme and adds some degree of maintenance cost to it... I guess that's cheaper than designing a new 4 axle road locomotive thoughFrom what I understand, the purpose of those A-1-A units ( and B'1 from EMD ) is that it saves two entire inverter-motor-axle units, saving on const and maintenance, without really reducing power output. Tractive effort is somewhat lower, but for intermodal trains it doesn't really matter. In a way it is an AC version of DC locomotives when accounting is involved.
