How do you dress to ride a road bike in a urban setting? I'm about to buy a bike to move around and exercise but I'll not be wearing lycra shit so I need inspo.

If I'm doing a 2-3 hour weekend exercise ride I'll wear the padded diaper & cargo shorts or whatever comfy shorts or even jeans. Regular T shirt or hoodie. I trashed all my sneakers and just rock running shoes for everything

Used to be just normal everyday clothes: jeans and cotton t-shirt/hoodie. I've discovered that jeans tend to wear out rather quickly in the crotch and butt area, so I stopped wearing jeans in favour of trousers and shorts designed for mtb. Since I discovered the superiority of merino wool I've also transitioned my wardrobe from cotton to wool. So that's my new everyday wear, optimised for cycling as my primary daily transport: mtb pants and merino t-shirts/hoodies.

Full lycra is larping and you don't have to wear anything in particular, but wearing appropriate attire is all about comfort. There are plenty of padded MTB shorts which are comfortable, won't chafe, wick sweat and are discrete.

I have nothing against lycra though. You can wear what you like. Tight lycra is nice for the aero. The stronger a rider you are, the faster you go, the more aero matters. The back pocket on a cycling jersey is nice on longer rides.
But the thread is about urban riding and I don't live in a metropolis where you have to ride for hours to even make it out of town.

The more that you ride, the more youll find that style is ultimately irrelevant.

You want something thats comfortable to wear over the longer distances, and that wont chafe you or wear out after a few months. I've been riding in cities for the better part of the last two decades and i usually wear padded tights underneath workout shorts, or bike-specific outerwear. There's some great cycling-specific brands that make casual wear that wont make you look like too much of a weenie off the bike and wont show off your cock bulge for all of society to see. Check out Chrome Industries or Levi's Commuter series for casual bottoms. I'll rock a tech baselayer of some sort on top with a hoodie or raincoat depending on the weather. Cosco sells insulated baselayers in a 3-pack for like 15 bucks and they'll keep you super warm and cozy.

At the end of the day, when you're on the bike, style will be the last thing on your mind. Focus on comfort :)

for long rides i quite like the gravel goober uniform. cargo lycra shorts, merino t, flannel, carry your shit in a bag on the bike instead of jersey pockets
for commuting i wear the same thing but cutoff shorts and merino undies instead of lycra. i have a gilles berthoud saddle which feels pretty good. i've tried patagonia baggies but find they work better on the bike with underwear which negates some of what makes them so good (freeballing + good for swimming)

Not him but I have, grains of sand to be more precise. Regular sunglasses aren't designed to redirect airflow away from the gaps, causing both teary eyes at high speed despite sunglasses as well as potentially objects slipping through the gaps with the air. Bought cycling specific sunglasses and haven't had issues since, besides fogging up when sweating heavily and stopping the bike.

I second this, normal shades are fine for slow riding in sunny condition but they dont protect properly from dust particles.
safety working glasses do the trick and are way cheaper than larping gear and do the same.

i wear wool or synthetics. first thing you want to do is ditch cotton. rapha makes shorts and trousers that look like regular clothes, but perform like lycra for comfort and moisture wicking. i avoid most of their other apparel though - not good enough for the price. wool t-shirt, socks, underwear. i like smartwool but anything wool is usually about the same. you may want stiffer shoes after awhile. chrome makes riding shoes that look like sneakers but have a stiffened sole to support the foot.

You don't need to wear anything special for normal urban riding, don't fall for the consoom jew and his carefully crafted lies anon. The only thing you might want to take into account when choosing what to wear is the weather, shorts and t-shirt in the summer, maybe jeans if you're worried about falling off or ar going to be hitting light trails, something waterproof in the rain, something warm but breathable in the cold, tighter fitting stuff in high winds etc.

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago, taking a bend too fast and hit a patch of ice, no damage done to me or bike thankfully.
This morning I almost went a couple of times on ice again, once when riding straight and not that fast, felt the bike sliding beneath me but managed to keep my balance up off the saddle, it gets the old heart racing I can tell you, there were trucks flying past me within a couple of feet at 60mph+.

I always recommend studded tyres the single most absolutely critical upgrade to your bicycle, whenever someone asks about winter riding. Based on personal experience.
I often get replies from anon arguing against studded tyres, saying they are bad for this or that or whatever other reason that never really makes sense to me.
