How do they handle it?

back in the olden days the engineer would steer the locomotive over the switch and the steering man had to run from car to car steering all of them over the switch before the train derailed. was a dangerous and deadly job. that all changed once air steering came about and allowed the engineer to steer each car remotely from the cab.

There is a funny story about this. A little info about it:
>electric loco has controller
>it regulates power in 32 steps
>controller has "++", "+", "0", "-", "--" positions
>controller in 0: governor stays in set position
>controller in "+" or "-" increases/decreases governor position by 1
>controller in "++": keeps increasing the governor position in small intervals
>controller in "--": sets governor to 0, and pull the emergency brakes
Now the story:

>they get in the locomotive and start
>slight left turn
>journalist thinks the controller is a steering wheel
>cager instinct kicks in
>pulls controller into "--" and stops the train in the middle of nowhere

These are monotone sounds that can make people sleepy

It becomes an instinct to push the button/press the pedal. There was a train driver who fell asleep, and travelled 20 km without stopping, because even in his sleep his feet was pushing and releasing the pedal.

source? also which locomotives have controllers like this? usually you just select one out of few (passenger) positions with a lever or out of dozens of positions (freight) with a wheel

Don't know where that anon comes from but that's how the majority of old French electromechanically driven locomotives work, minus the wheel having any impact on the air brakes.
Multipurpose electrical locomotives would typically have between 20 and 40 traction notches.

Some German locos have them as well. I'm not familiar enough with DE stuff to keep the names straight but I know I've seen the "steering wheel" in some of their smaller diesels.

A couple of years ago I found a video of a steam locomotive with a throttle wheel instead of a lever. I can't remember which one it was, I think it was a Pere Marquette engine. Pretty neat, I like the idea of a wheel throttle more than a lever

The Hungarian V43 locomotive. There are power levels. These locomotives were produced from the 1960's with silicone rectifier technology.

Are the thinking of a reverser wheel? A steam locomotive has two throttles, in a sense, as you can control flow through both the head throttle in the boiler and the valve bodies in the pistons themselves. Many reversers, especially in the US, use a wheel type screw mechanism. Here is Pere Marquette 1225's reverser.

That must have been what it was, but I could swear it was a throttle with a larger, silver metallic wheel. Oh well. I guess the disadvantage of using a wheel for either would be the inability to quickly see which position it is in (compared to a lever).
