badly setup cantis are awful
on the other hand setting up v-brakes is easy
even shit tier v-brakes with shit tier (new) pads have adequate power. They are the best lazy man or poorfag option, by far.
A good v-brake setup feels too powerful, too grabby, for normal use, but when you ride steep trails, or get them wet or muddy, or are descending a mountain with a loaded bike, that takes the edge off the power and they are very good. Those use cases, imo, are where good discs, with superior power become the best option, so crap v-brakes are a sensible poorfag option, better than crap cantis, and better than crap discs, while good v-brakes are an upgrade for an underbiked canti bike or a disclet cope.
A good canti setup has better feel and modulation and is much more pleasant to use for casual use, even riding hardpack fast in the dry, then become 'good enough' but power is lacking and it will check you.
