Why does this 23 year old Australian sedan (pic related) out-tow fatfuck american trucks?
A 1998 Ford Falcon AU, base model, has 2300 kg (5070 lbs) towing capacity. Yet the base model 2021 Tacoma (2.7L) has only 3500 lbs? And it's just less powerful: 159 HP 181 ft-lbs, versus a base Falcon's 220 hp 264 ft-lbs. The 3.5L Tacoma can outtow a 23 year old sedan, 7000lbs to 5000. It's more powerful, 278 hp, but 265 ft-lbs torque is barely a match.
Chevy Colorados are the same story, except not even the top models beat it on torque. I don't know much about the American pickup market, and I know some trucks like an F150 DO mog a 23 year old sedan, but the fact that my old Falcon is even in the same ballpark, let along beating some of them, astounds me.
What are truck-makers in the USA smoking? Why can't all of these huge trucks beat my old Falcon?
