Well, at least in passenger cars tire sizes by width in millimeters and sidewall height as a percentage of width have prevailed, but wheels are still labeled in inches, so you end up with 205/55 tires on 16x6 inch wheels. Meanwhile bicycles already have the uniform ETRTO system, people just have to start using it.

I disagree. 26", 29er , 27.5
or the road equivalent names are much easier to say and remember than:

There are so few relevant tire sizes that it's good like this. It might be technically wrong but it's a nicer scale and an easier system. Like giving height in feet/inches or some cooking with cups of things.

Yeah but unless you pick a specific tire size no 26", 27.5" or 29" tire will actually be that diameter. As a matter of fact a 60mm 26" mountain bike tire has THE SAME diameter as a 28mm 28" road bike tire. The claimed size and actual size are just all over the fucking place. When I buy a 40-622 tire I know that it'll be 622+40+40mm in diameter and that other 622 tires fit on the wheel as well and that they'll all be actual 622mm diameter on the inside.

And 40-622, the 40 part is not diameter it's width. The diameter of the tire and the width of the tire will both change depending on the width of the rim, and random sizing discrepancies. You can't actually just know based on paper what size tires will be or whether they will fit or not, unless you're conservative about it. Tire sizes are by their very nature random and approximate.

think about them like idioms or names for the standards

And they do actually give you the one helpful piece of information which is, which is larger.

That is, unless you include 27", because that's larger than 29". Interesting you say 28" instead of 29" (the same thing) because that's another nonsense thing you could not do, if we were to commit to one it would and should be 29".

The diameter roughly equals the width since the cross section is approximately circular, and the variation of diameter and width with rim width is negligible because most people will be putting tires on the same type of bike on similar rim widths anyway. What really ends up fucking shit over is manufacturers diverging from their theoretical sizes in reality, but usually tires end up narrower than they're sold as, not wider.

Well no because most 28" bikes will actually have a 28" tire diameter or less. In fact road bikes are more like 27" in reality. The only abominations that actually achieve 29" diameter are downhill mountain bikes.

I don't know about that anon. Take road wheels for example, slightly old road wheels will be like 15mm internal rim width, now it's 19+. Big difference and lots of riders in each camp.

This can make tire size fluctuate like 1 or 2 sizes depending on wheels. It's kind of ridiculous.

Same as tire width being in mm until it gets to 50 mm then it becomes 2".

Same as 650b vs 27.5. The same size. Different names

And valid to have different names to differentiate between road and mtb, but not valid to call 622 28" and 29" because that makes people think they're different sizes and confuses inbetween grabel interpretations
