, I feel as someone who has been working on the Zumwalt program for 7 years, I need to contribute this this topic and I'm going to break this down by topic.
I absolutely FUCKING HATE videos like this, that in the face of a information vacuum on still highly classified projects, make 'educated guesses' or use opinion pieces as official sources of information to fill in the blanks left by actual official sources and then proceed to make all the wrong conclusions.
>Price
To clarify on price, while the cost per unit is high, this is largely due to the curtailment of the class down to 3 ships. For the manufacturing of anything especially ships there are many hidden costs with setting up production lines, economy of scale plays a huge role in the cost. As for each ship requires it's own set of everything, from radar arrays themselves, to every single one of the unique circuit cards that make up the signal processing system for it (plenty of items are still OTS though), so when ordering a ship and it's components the cost to set up manufacturing is included in the price per unit. When you build things as complex as a ship, R&D and associated production costs are USUALLY spread out through out an entire production run.
