An exception are large, dense cities where low government interference can still lead to good public transit as people demand an alternative to clogged roads. In that case it's really more left wing for big government to build up huge highways.
That said, unless you're full libertarian, it's still a positive utility that should be provided by the government, as it allows people to move about more easily and has a generally positive effect on communities, with a low cost and little government interference outside of transit planning.
Switzerland is generally a liberal country, but still has top tier public transport. It does invest a good amount of tax money tho.
