Even if were a real failure, odds are the engine would still be able to produce power for a while; the way I would do it is to turn to the nearest airport for emergency landing (which happens to be away from the restricted airspace), then try to troubleshoot the engine, only cutting the mixture if the symptoms worsen (overheating, loss of power, weird noise, etc).
You definitely did a error by trying to argue back during the test, that´s what debriefs are for. You showed you are unable to keep a cool head under pressure, and I would focus more on fixing that as much as possible.
Don´t know what works better for you, but i would do it by practising multitasking; at first, there will enough tasks to overwhelm your head and you will shut down. With practise, you´ll begin to be able to organize the information in your head to accomplish the tasks you have to do, but there will be a point where you realize you can´t accomplish everything. Hopefully, by the time you are able to get to the point that you don´t feel bad for having to fail some less important tasks, you'll be able to keep your wits about you when something unexpected happens.
