tools to refurb bike?

hey bros i have a trek 4500 like pic related. i know its nothing special but its the best bike ive ever owned and i love it

i know basic maintenance like tires, brakes etc, but id like to take the bike apart this winter and refurbish it from top to bottom.

what special tools will i need for this? are there kits available with everything id need? i have basic hand tools like pliers and wrenches, but nothing else really

also can anyone recommend a good resource i can use while taking the bike apart to learn about how everything works? thanks

Yeah, this. Unless it has specific issues then there isn't much point refurbishing it apart from regular maintenance. If the bottom bracket or headset are worn then it's probably easier to just replace them.

If you haven't serviced the fork in a while then it's worth doing that probably. You should be able to find the manual for those specific forks online that will tell you the tools you need.

FWIW I had a similar vintage trek 6500 which is just the upgraded version of this bike, so I'd recommend you change the brakes for something better (XT or avid V brakes ideally), since they were what let the bike down for me.

I guess you might want to replace the cassette and chain which requires a "chain tool" and and a "cassette tool" that you can get from any bike shop pretty cheap. Also check the condition of the wheels, make sure you don't have bad bearings, or rim wear. If not then maybe they could do with a true which is probably easier to get a bike shop to do than attempt yourself.

because its years old and getting worn.i bought it used 5+ years ago.

also im bored and want to learn to maintain a bike from top to bottom. my plan is to dismantle a part of the bike, inspect it and clean/lube or replace it as needed

definitely lots of wheel issues, and the front forks are not in the best shape either. im not sure about the cassette, it turns fine but i suppose id need to take it off to properly assess the condition

Yeah, start with the wheels and the fork. Maybe replace the tyres if they aren't recent. And get some good quality used V brakes or at the very least some new/better pads. These things alone should improve the ride hugely.

Maybe replace the gear and brake cables too.

Learn how to purchase and install new koolstop brake pads on the front and back. Take time online to look at how to adjust "Toe" that's the difference between C work and A work.

This is prob a stock pic and you don't own a bike but I'd also get a nice pair of pin flat MTB pedals similar to chester race face in silver
