Giant TCR is the same Geometry as a 19" 1990s mtb the cost and weight reduction made the bike popular enough that Giant never bothered to make a carbon fibre version

Do they really look dainty though? I was in a Shop the other day. Road bikes these days have really fat tubes. You could basically balance a can of coke on the top tube. I've got ~£1000 - looking to get a road bike (previously had a Trek FX2 hybrid that sucked, I hated flat bars)

It's currently between the Triban RC 520 (£850)

Don’t you have a Decathlon store in the near where you can try out the bike? Usually you get what you pay for, but the Triban is objectively the better value I guess.. This isn’t the answer you want to hear but if I was buying my first entry level road bike, i would try a bicycle out in person. Fit is the most Important thing and also, get the bicycle that you think looks the coolest lmao.

105 is nice but the Triban only has like half the groupset with off-brand brakes and crankset, and everything else about it is shit.

I've seen differing opinions on rim brakes vs disk online, but that seems to be comparing them to hydraulic disks rather than mechanical. So you're saying mechanical disks aren't worth it at all then? It does bring the price of the Domane down by about £200

Hydro disk is good, mechanical disk is crap. Disk is important for mountain bikes but the industry has been forcing them on road bikes because they're more profitable and make it easier to upsell you on expensive wheels (because brake track wear). They're pretty much pointless unless you ride in the rain a lot or actually do want expensive wheels. The rim brakes on the domane will be cheapos and not the absolute greatest but you'll be able to improve them a lot with a pad upgrade if you want.

For that price point under 10kg is decent. Each kg below that represents probably another $1000. Weight doesn't really matter that much at the end of the day though. Replacing the shitty tires that come on it with it with race tires (~$100/pair on amazon) will probably chop another third of a kg off it.

It'll 'feel' faster but probably won't actually be that much faster on the stopwatch. Acceleration and going up hills will be very slightly easier but it's also in proportion to what you weigh yourself. Most importantly you'll feel less jealous when others are having weight weenie dick-waving contests.

I've got this bike, about 13000km so far.

I have Hy-roads (Hy/Rd) and they are great. Tremendous upgrade over full mech, even double side calipers like Spyre. Not as good as full hydro but it is close. Definitely a good choice.

There's no "normal" clearance, as long as your foot doesn't touch the wheel at any point in turning.
The main issues are:
1: Tiny women that need <48cm frames. 700C wheels can be too big and cause to strike on such small frames, so rather than opting for wacky geometry, the best solution is to go for a frame that takes 650B wheels
2: Frames in the low/mid 50s and a rider with proportionally large feet. Usually the best solution is working around a fit where the cleat/foot position brings the foot rearward on the pedals, which is desirable in many cases anyway due to higher posterior chain activation.

The general way to tune gears is to have them on the tighter side so they are rubbing against the next biggest sprocket, then backing off the adjuster until the chain stops rubbing and making noise.
You shouldn't generally need to trim if you've set things up well, but H limit screw adjustment is very important, especially more flexy frames.

- Both front derailleur positions have two sub-positions that you can choose between to keep the chain from rubbing on the derailleur.
- To swap between them make a smaller motion of the appropriate lever and there will be a softer click that won't move the chain but will move the derailleur slightly.
- If you try to move to a trim position that isn't there nothing will happen unless you keep pressing the lever and either shift or run into the limit screw.
- If you shift the chain you'll always be in the same trim position no matter which position you were in before you shifted. That chart is technically correct but unnecessarily confusing. Just shift to the ring you want then adjust trim if you want. Nothing's going to go wrong if you do anything in a different order.
- If you don't remember what trim position you're in, press with the lever that won't shift you. I.e. if you're in the big ring press the big lever, then whether it clicks or not you'll know you're in the outer trim position now.

I recommend also buying mudguards. Presonally I use SKS Bluemels Matt 35. This kinda transforms my bike into a granny-bike, but there's less cleaning when riding in wet weather. They still haven't cleaned the cycleways so there's lots of sand everywhere

The cleat is the part where most of your foot pressure goes. If you want to minimize bunions, I would assume you should position them as far from the bunion as (comfortably) possible.

If it shifts when you adjust trim something needs adjusting.

Main problem with the diagram is that it implies shifting from the outside positions (on the picture) is two actions when really it's just one. If you want to shift you push the lever all the way in and the trim just happens to get moved along the way.

Just disconnect the cable from the derailleur and hold it in one hand while slowly shifting with the other. Then you can see and feel how much cable it's pulling/releasing.

So yeah, think of different parts of the wheel as triangles. When thinking about dish, we're looking at the right triangle made from the center of wheel (where the rim is), center of wheel (on the hub), and where the spoke attaches to the hub (hub flange). Anything that makes it necessary to move the flange in closer to the center, such as disc brakes or the cassette/freewheel, will make the spokes "bulge" less on that side.

Numbing hands means you might be putting too much weight on your handlebar, this can be due to long stem, too wide handlebar, wrong saddle height or bike is too big/small for you or, you are not jsut used to it yet.

I will try wax as lubricant.
Read that you really need to an oil free chain for that. Does that mean you even need to wash out the oil from bearing?
Using stuff like petroleum should do that.
But will the wax get into the bearing to replace the oil as lubricant or do you just damage the the chain bearing by totally degreasing it?

I like to use one of those clip on chain cleaners with a bit of something mild like wd40 to get the worst off then clean the wd40 grime off with a cloth then oil, wheel it round slowly a few times and make sure all the rollers are moving then clean it again with a cloth. never seems to get dirty then as long as I wipe before or after every ride to keep the overall grime level down

Get an old pot, a block of parrafin and a bit of ptfe powder. Clean the chain with degreaser or ideally diesel/ petrol (works best) and leave it out to dry.

Heat the parrafin wax and add powder, loop some old brake/shifter cable around the chain and stir it in the pot for 10 mins. It doesn't need to be super hot, just enough to melt. Take it out and wipe down with a rag and bam, you have a weather resistant lube that picks up practically nothing from the road.

Repeat after every 500km or so

Use a half frame bag and a handlebar feed bag. Bottle goes under the half frame bag and into the feed bag, stuff goes into the half frame bag. Tools and patches into a normal saddle bag. If you are a thirsty lad you can get normal saddle bags with bottle holder to hold an extra bottle.

Do they make frame bags that are set back, attaching to the seat tube? I just worry about a frame bag blocking my shifters on the downtube. Leg rub might be a problem, but I'm not sure if it'd be full enough to be a concern. The top tube bento box thing seems like a good solution for longer rides where I'm only really concerned about carrying water and food. I already keep my tube/tools in a small saddle bag, so that's taken care of. Honestly, a frame bag might hold everything considering everything else I carry is fairly small.

Any new mtb for 600usd will be shit. You can get a good bike new for 600 usd but not a good mountain bike.
Used mountain bikes can be great though.
A 1990s rigid mountain bike will only be like 200 usd on craigslist and will be good for messing around on, but if you want more of a 'proper' modern mountain bike for long rides then 600 usd sounds reasonable and pinkbike is the best place to buy. Look for a hardtail, because full suspension = more expensive, so going cheap on a full suspension means you'll be getting low quality, so a low quality fs will be similar price to a moderate quality hardtail

Hello lads, how do I keep my front rim brake centered? Even if I tighten my bolt to the max, I can still move the entire brake with my hand. It’s a carbon fork, so tightening it down isn’t an option. The back brake is steady as a rock.

I like to have the brake pads really really close to the rim. When I’m climbing. I can hear the brakepad rubbing on the rim. Presumably because the front brake is moving and not because the fork is flexing (I’m no Wattmonster, by any means)

Ease off the adjuster on the front brake a bit so the pads have more room to allow for bending.
Also, check the pads to see if they're toed in excessively. You only need a tiny bit of toe in at the trailing edge.

brake calipers often have or develop fucky issues with play. They can still work perfectly well but if you're autistic and want it to be perfect then you should just replace it, it's highly unlikely it will be a solveable or even tangible issue.

Dude no, unless the brakes are old or visibly corroded, a flush out of the pivots with degreaser and a light lubricant will solve any sticking problems.
Some brakes are actually meant to "float" so that they self-center, even if you wrench them on way over spec; anon likely just has a flexy front end and needs to wind out the adjuster a little is all.

What tire pressure should I run in my MTB?

I ride an MTB but mainly use it for commuting, my standard route is about 75% road and 25% trail. (I live in the Philippines)

Tire says minimum should be 30 psi and the maximum is 80 psi, I'm not looking to go faster, just something that'll make it a bit resistant to puncture. Right now, I'm running 30 on front, and 35 on the rear.

Yeah, and if you weld your pedals into place you'll have a tough time reusing them too. Sounds like the current situation is fubar so either have to abandon whatever you were trying to do or give in and replace the tape (and put the new stuff on not-stupidly). Nice soft gel tape should be like $20 at a bike shop, or you can cheap out on cork stuff for $10-$15 on amazon which will feel like crap and have less chance of being reusable next time. Or if you just want to suffer you can get something made of plastic and razor blades for $3 on aliexpress.

Cotton and shellac if you're a poorfag.
A roll of thin cotton webbing costs next to nothing, then all you need is shellac, turps, and a couple of champagne corks.
If you're a super duper poorfag, you could go for hockey tape or tennis handle wrap.

Cord would work too. Turks head knots are tough but it'd look nice and be real grippy even when wet. See pic for fishing rod handles as an example.
Shellac over cotton was what they used in the old days. You'd do one half strength watery layer of shellac to penetrate the tape through to the bars, then a topcoat for durability which could even be dyed if you felt cheeky.

Another alternative I've not tried but could work is textured heat shrink tubing you can buy.
I think you'd just cut a section for above and below the bars, or maybe one section if you could get it on properly past the drops without using heaps of talc.
The downside of this would be that you'd have to take your brake levers off to put it on..

Set your tires for hardpack offroad xc. Start at a little above 15 percent deflection when you're sitting on it on road, AFTER adjusting your suspension. That's probably 45 PSI, depending on what percentage of your diet is jolibees. Fatties need more pressure. skinny people need less.

on most cup and cone models there's a "sweet spot" you need to get the locknut into when re-tightening it

No, I did it about a year ago but it came loose recently on the drive side so the axle had to be taken out completely. Definitely an error on my part but everything was smooth after I repacked and replaced the hub bearings the first time. The axle itself spins smoothly with zero play, it's just the freehub I'm having issues with. Once I tighten on the cassette, the freehub ends up seizing up a bit even though it was fine without the cassette installed unless the cassette is barely finger tight. if I were to torque it to spec it just locks up the freehub entirely.
I'm just confused since everything went back together exactly how it came apart.
Also I did not find any missing spacer, and now that I think about it I don't remember anything like that on the axle itself. The only thing that's there is the dust shield but that is pressed in there pretty firmly. I'll try to find an exploded diagram just in case.

I have the blue ones for arch support. my arch wasn't supported by the standard insoles and the bottom around the arch of my feet would start hurting after a while. so I tried these Specialized insoles, because they're just 20-25€ unlike other insoles that cost much more. I haven't experienced any pain since I put them in. They are relatively thick, so keep that in mind.

this can happen when the cassette lockring binds on the dust seal inside the freehub. You either installed it upside down, or didn't press it in far enough, or used a different one that is wrong.

Or if you're desperate, remove the seal from the hub entirely. The cassette will protect it somewhat. Yes this is dumb but you might have no other choice.

Fire roads here are a vicious thing, with very large gravel and lots of divots that fill with gravel and throw you off your bike if you catch a wheel in them mid corner.
The widest tyre with the lowest pressure you can get away with is the method for our fire trails here, I'd take mud or a hardpack with jutting rocks over them any day of the week.

You're looking around 25-27psi each tyre then, assuming the gravel is uncompacted and a bit slippery. Put 1 or 2 psi less in the front tyre, as you're likely riding a bike with a more rearward weight distro.
If the gravel is nice, you might be able to push the pressures to 27-29psi.
This is all assuming you and your bike weigh in at around 90kg or so.

hm, didn't think about that. if I can't figure it out then I may do that. or just remove the seal. it's just a 7sp hypergrile/uniglide freehub body that's fairly chewed up so i am not that concerned about replacing it if they are readily available.

Could be one of many things. Roughly in order of most likely to least likely:
