Air holds the brakes open, and it also applies the brakes. This is a fail safe system: if the air supply is lost, the brakes apply regardless. This is convenient because a disconnected trailer has the brakes applied with no effort. The red handle is supplying air to the trailer to open the brakes. The yellow handle is applying air to close all the brakes, including the tractor.

Isn't a red color supposed to be linked to all kinds of "kill switch" or emergency thingies? I thought yellow is trailer air supply and red is parking brake.
