I guess I just got lucky. I applied like once or twice and heard back. Every resume nowadays is ran through a computer program that just cherry picks certain keywords to get it sent to the top whereas it used to be about actually knowing someone. Then people complained about nepotism and they stopped preferring family members as much. The quality of life is definitely better compared to the crap everyone seems to deal with at a Class 1, maybe while making a little less. I brought home $65k last year working a comfortable schedule which I know isn't much but this year I'm on track to bring home about $100k with raises and promotion. Trying to go for an engineer position so I don't have to deal with autistic passengers and make a little extra. I'm home every night and I don't mind working our extra board. We can hold jobs usually within a few months of getting out of class so it's still worth it imo. At least until they try to replace us with turnstiles.
Would like to ideally jump ship to Amtrak for systemwide seniority but their HR department is basically nonexistent right now which makes it damn near impossible to get in unless you already work with them.
