I miss the look of LPS street lights so fucking much. I'm a brainlet, but shouldn't it be possible to have yellow/orange LED lights that replicate this SOVLFULL look?
Is there anyone here lucky enough to live in a city/town/country where streetlights haven't been replaced by these white aberrations?

I don't like how the LPS lamps washed out all colors but they were much less straining on the eyes than the bright cold white LEDs they're being replaced with. If the color temp was changed to a warmer standard on the LEDs it would help a lot.

They did wash out the colors but notice how even though the white lights are brighter, the orange lamps' glow covers a larger area. Everything behind the white lamp is dark, while the building behind the orange lamp is lit.

white/blue light makes for better visibility, that's all there is to it. it's ugly as fuck but it deters joggers.
that being said, all my house lights are yellow, except the kitchen.

I think it does the opposite, judging how dark everything behind the white lamp is.
I just read a newspaper article from years ago, when LEDs had just been installed in some suburban neighborhood, and the people there complained that they couldn't see each other except when directly under the lamps.

I mean, not really. No matter where you put them, there's always gonna be an intense shadow around them. Not gonna be any easier to see than when a pig shines his flashlight at you, you realize why they do that right?
Basically I have to walk in the dark to make sure I can see through the lights into the dark and defeats the whole purpose here if it's trying to keep me safe.

there are three main issues
first is beam pattern. pressure lamps have a very even, diffuse beam. This can be replicated by LED, but that costs money
the second is spectrum. spectrum is what makes pressure lamps so easy on the eyes, since there's so little blue light. no, frequency doesn't matter, most LEDs in commercial environments will be driven by DC current anyway
the final problem is the jews running the street lamps. street lamps are actually only rarely managed by a local government, they're usually outsourced at a discount to for-profit utilities who will use the cheapest chinese leds money can buy unless municipalities specifically forbid them from doing so.

That last bit is why I'm convinced these things are part of a scheme of some sort. Not some weird conspiracy shit like they're trying to fuck our brains or something. More like, they're installing the cheapest LEDs they possibly can, claiming they're "saving the environment", only those LEDs will burn out much quicker than they're meant to. Buy new cheap LEDs, replace them all, wait a year for them to fail, rinse and repeat. It's already happening in my city. The last sodium lampposts disappeared a couple of years ago, but about 1/4 of them are already burning out. There's a stretch of freeway about 200 yards long next to my neighborhood that doesn't have a single working LED.

I was working for a utility when they began switching from mercury vapor to HPS. A lot of people were complaining that the color rendition of HPS was much worse than the bright blue-white MV lamps. Making color recognition and reading signs much worse under HPS.

Now, we are switching to LEDs, with color rendition close to that of MV. And people complain again. It's not the lamp colors. People just hate change.

I prefer the left. Could be a little warmer perhaps, but sodium lights always had a dingy look to me. All colors other than white/yellow appear black and it turns the night sky a brownish orange.

LED street lighting can be done well or poorly. It’s that simple. Sure they don’t reach the yellowness of sodium but they can be comfortable and pleasant to the eye. I think a lot of councils etc rush the process or don’t really know what they’re doing, or go for the cheapest option which leads to those horrible white ones. ah yes reminds me of the early 00s in bongistan (which was really the 90s unless you lived in the south). You'd have really dim blue lights in supermarket toilets and bus stations etc to try and stop people shooting heroin.

This is the only good thread on /n/ right now and the single worse thing that has happened to cities. I dislike how when replacing the bulbs they look like they replaced them with nothing at all on the highways. It doesn't really brighten up anything and gives the whole city the aesthetic of a retail parking lot.

It's just the most practical and comfortable color tone, closest to the sun, that's why most people have warm white LEDs in their homes. I wish LED streetlights tried to replicate that instead of the cold blue white they all emit now.

Why can't we have motion sensors on street lights to have them do more lighting on demand? This should be possible nowadays especially with LEDs. The dimming does not even have to be very extreme, just go from 100% brightness down to 20% over the course of something like 5 minutes. Ramp it up to 100% again if something enters the detection radius.
Tell me why this idea is completely retarded.

i remember reading somewhere that a single led replacement of a street light in the US would save 100 USD in energy costs (not sure if in a month or in a year) those are considerable savings that "soul" doesn't justify having higher costs for.

but to claim its just anti rape light.. i think lighting itself is useless except to contribute to the feeling of safety much the same way that broken window theory contributes to the feeling of safety. if you were to go to a safe city in a safe country and turned off all lights for months on end i seriously doubt their crime stats would go up as a result

I like the even ground coverage of LED. The new fixtures in the park can completely fill the space between light poles. The multiple light sources from a single light creates a neat effect when shining through trees, moreso when its windy.

Lack of spill over means planners can occasionally goof and install an inappropriate light. In a stretch near me the lights don't illuminate the road at all because the poles are too far back. A fixture could be picked with optics to handle that.

LPS was nice. It wasn't a glare-y point-source, and while it had a zero CRI, it didn't make you look like a corpse like plain mercury vapor did.
The best streetlight these days is the induction lamp. It's even more long-lasting than LPS (assuming the ballast electronics are made well), and while they tend to be have a "cool white" color temperature, the CRI is good. But, OH NO, they contain EVIL mercury! Can't have that! No, instead we get to have LEDs needing a big metal heatsink and shit LEDs and electronics which last maybe a year. That's much better for the environment.

Yeah I see these everywhere. Some factory in China must have shit out some garbage UV die LEDs with a stolen phosphor formula. It's like when the Chinese stole the electrolytic formula from Nichion which didn't specify an anti-corrosion compound, so we ended up with leaking capacitors in everything.
On the upside, I guess they can now go out and repaint the road markings with fluorescent paint, it'll show up real well under the nice UV streetlamps.

It doesn’t really work like that and I think you know that. They don’t hire special companies to come do this sort of work. The people who will do it are already employed and already receiving a wage and it’s not like they won’t be hanging out at the county garage anyways. Besides even if it took a week to do each bulb these things last a good ten years if not more, savings will be definitely be had in spades.

Every illumination device produces heat. LEDs just give more lumens per watt than incandescent.

I saved this picture someone took of my city a few years back. It was about 1/4 the way into the LED switchover. You can see which neighborhoods have LED streetlights because they appear dimmer with different color temp. The motorway interchanges look like little galaxies.

Also fuck all that white daylight lighting in commercials zones. I'm glad the utility procrastinated long enough that people realized 5000K was terrible for street lighting installing 3000K instead.

So what I'm saying is that it's not necessarily the LED tech that's at fault, but the retardation of city planners. You can, after all, go to a hardware store and purchase 'vintage' style LED bulbs that look somewhat identical to the warm glow of incandescent edision bulbs

While leds have 30 to 40% effeciency, that leaves 60 to 70% as heat. But you cant plug them in directly either. They have a circuit board full of resistors & stuff to lower the voltage before it gets to the emitter. Those circuit boards also create waste heat.

I presume the argument is that power consumption doesn't matter much at night because electricity is cheap because power plants generate some degree of wasted energy at night anyway

That's also due to the fact that LEDs are more 'direct' when it comes to projecting light vs LPS lamps are old school and project in all directions and are just covered with an enclosure. Go look at a LED lamp and you'll see dozens of LEDs all pointing straight down compared to an LPS which is basically a light bar.

Some retail LED lights have shitty power factors. But street lights are a better engineered product with built in power factor correction, because when you use power at an industrial scale the power company will penalize you if you don't. Philips street lights for example have a PF of 0.99.

The post you replied to was likely referring to power factor when talking about people not understanding how power plants work. Lights with a poor power factor put more demand on the generating plant than the watt rating on the package. Consumer meters don't measure that so you get a free ride wasting power. But that wouldn't apply to street lights because the power company would damn sure make the city pay the full cost. In many cases its the power companies themselves managing the street lights so they would require lights with a high power factor.

While the concept of power factor is new to me it sounds like a measurement of how much power in essence is wasted. Either way power distribution doesn’t work in that fashion. You get your power from the local distributor who gets it from the grid. City lighting is more often than not handled by the city itself. While I’m aware that maybe in rural areas the power company may do it as a service to the city or town I would imagine that’s just a drop in the bucket.

It was pretty awful hanging out under mercury street lighting at night as a kid vs sodium vapor. Mercury light made you look like a corpse.
Mercury vapor light did work to the advantage of giving off a spectrum somewhat matching scotopic vision, so they didn't have to be bright to look bright.

I got some roads with lamps like that near me. Normally they are dimmed to ~25% I guess and when you go near them/pass them they brighten up. I really like the idea but the problem with these lights in perticular is the sensor has a range of only 2/3 meters so it only pops on when you are nearly there and it's not bright enough to shine to the next one.

I don't really care what colour they are, I've heard some colours are better than others for night-vision, sleep, etc, but it should be just bright enough so objects are just barely visible to avoid walking into them. Streetlights use hundreds of individual emitters but it is in service of putting just the right amount of light exactly where it is needed. They aren't all ultra high power emitters like you find in stadium lighting.

For outdoor lighting you are also dealing with the inverse square law when lighting large areas vs a small room.

there are drivers for LPS that limit the current or something it dimms the light a bit but greatly improves efficiency and lifetime. and the LPS are just as efficient as led.
and they dont fuck up moths and other insects.
