It's unbelievable how many idiots are killed by trains at crossings. Then "community activists" complain that railroads should be building over/underpasses, walkways, and fencing off the entire right of way to protect morons from themselves.

British/Network Rail have gone to great lengths to remove pedestrian and car level crossings where possible.

the amount of people who fuck around at level crossings is unbelievable. the are thousands of videos of retards crossing level crossings when barriers are down and then either narrowly missing or being hit by trains. the non-fatal ones are on youtube, the fatal one were on liveleak.

There's around 5800 car-train accidents in the US annually, or just under 16 a day. This is less a Brightline issue and more just the reality of operating any train here.

Caltrain has a bigger kill record while they were doing the Ralston grade separation. This is because the place where Belmont and San Carlos meet is where the welfare office, homeless shelter, liquor store, tattoo parlor and bus stop all are. 3 suicides a week for most of 2002 until they finally got it built. Caltrain has a reputation for being the favored suicide device for local highschool students as the train tracks are adjacent highschools in Burlingame, Palo Alto and San Jose.

There's nothing wrong here, it's the natural consequence of people deciding they don't want to live anymore.

I don't know if the other posters are being daft, but 'wilderness' is a legal term in the UK. It's land held by the Crown, that doesn't have a charter of incorporation, or the charter has been revoked (rare).

If a motorway or railway wants to build on, or cross wilderness, there's an approval process. The project has to form a Company, which petitions the Queen. If she approves the contract, she then appoints a steward, and work is scheduled.

Here's the snag: any further alterations (not in the contract) require HRM to issue a licence (properly, a 'licence patent'). But in general they haven't been issued since UK ACTS (the post 9-11 laws), and for anything under the purview of English Heritage they likely never will. For now, all crossings (including wildlife crossing) under this system have to simply reuse what's already been built.

anyway, my point is that Network Rail - who own and maintain the railway infrastructure - do cost/risk/benefit assessments so that track is fenced off. this particular stretch of track wasn't fenced off because it's in the middle of nowhere, there's practically zero risk of someone accidentally finding themselves on the track - ironically, the crash was caused because the nearby motorway wasn't fenced off properly.
