I like nobblies and here's why, no ride I take is ever completely on the road or pavement. For example my commute, starts of on the road, then I cut across a park, then I zig zag through a few cobbled alleyways, I say cobbled but some of them are more like scattered rubble and dirt, then more road vbefore I jump onto the riverside track which is pretty much gravel like I guess, small stones loosely packed into the soil, then a path which was no doubt smooth but is now crumbling, finally down another gravel like track and I'm there. same for when I ride into toen, I go a different way but I still take every opportunity to take shortcuts, more alleys, parks and various surfaces.
And it's not that I'm just taking shortcuts, my town is trying to be bike friendly but failing miserably. Bike paths tend to be a couple of feet wide sections of the main road, they start and end abruptly and with the amount of third worlders we have now driving courtesy is a thing of the past, it's dog eat dog and nikes just do not belong in that envirnment during the rush hour.
And as another anon states accuratel even twhen I do take the roads they are absolutely fucked, potholes everywhere and because we are forced to hug the kurbs we have storm drains and crumbling sections of pavement all the way along. For me the hit I take on speed for the short stretches of smooth flat surface I may or may not ride on is well worth it, the confidence and stability during the rest of the ride more than makes up for it, plus it's nice riding a bike that you know you can take anywhere because when I ride I like to feel free.
