Copenhagen is a good transitional city for pedestrians.
The greater DC area, Philadelphia, NYC, and Chicago are American cities that don’t require cars to get around, largely due to the extensive train system. However, these are very colorful cities, so you can’t raise your kids to be independent.
For independent children who can go to the park, their friends’ houses, and school on their own, you have to join the military (in America) and live in on-base housing. They can walk, but won’t learn how to use public transit. However, they won’t grow up to be weak daggers reliant on authority to do everything for them.
Either that, or you move to farm towns like Delta, AK or Philadelphia, NY and teach them to live and work on a farm. They won’t walk anywhere, but they’ll have no where to go. Just farm, and play around the cow shit. So better than car-suburbs.
But those are America: highways, gangsters, or farm. And in Montana, you can get meth gangs, cow shit, AND impassable highways all in the same town! But you can get a good life in the large college towns or small cities if you’re a single adult, but that’s lonely and empty.
