Can you imagine some fuckers though in the 60's about drawing a highway network straight through it?
It would've been a project approximated to take until the year 2000, but luckily people were shocked and there wasn't nearly the money available to just start tearing the city down and to build several massive interchanges over water(!). Unlike in US cities, the highways would've gone through rather old and prestigious parts of town, so there wasn't a "inner city" with certain kinds of minority communities to sacrifice and "renew" with the project.

Ultimately, their projections about traffic-growth were severely off. On the other hand, induced demand is a thing, so the results of the project might've become a justification for itself. A self-fulfilling prophecy for a car-centric city.

That's actually dumb as hell, such a huge investement and not taking fully advantage of it. It should at least have one lane in each direction for buses and commercial traffic.

Not really surprising considering most of the longest tunnels are rail-only. Road's more relaxed gradient and speed requirement also plays a part.

Well it's poor highway planning anyway. Too much weaving with short junction spacing. Bad sight lines, sharp curves, steep gradients. Capacity is more bottlenecked by intersections downstream. Traffic signal coordination is more cost-effective and efficient.
Don't know anything here, purely looking at maps: if you fully grade-separate Turunväylä (extended) -- Hakamaentie -- Koskelantie -- Lahdenväylä (with direct interchange with Tuusulanväylä). you get a nicer inner circumferential route already.
