I'm buying just the frame to start with. Plan on building it out and riding across America in a couple months. I don't know where to start to figure out what parts work with it. I could go to my local bike shop, and I still might, but I'd rather just find a website that explains sizes and stuff.

Does anybody have any good advice here, or should I just go to the bike shop and talk to them?

I think if you're going to have a custom bike and do long tours on it, you need to cut your teeth on the mechanics of it and understand it all. Even if that means it's not built as well as it might otherwise be.

do as much of the work yourself as you can. lbs probably won't be a cheap way to buy parts either.

Firstly, do you have any parts at all?
What is your budget?

Post your local craigslist and i'll have a geeze to see if there's a sensible parts bike on there. Stripping complete bikes is the cheapest way to get parts.

the surly spec is a pretty sensible starting point

the most important piece of spec, by far, is getting good handbuilt wheels. You do want to find a mechanic to do that, and i would go off the spec they recommend. Maybe take them a pair of deore hubs and have them spec the rest.
I'd also consider a dynamo front hub if money allows. Dynamo lighting is excellent for touring, makes riding in the early morning or after sundown effortless.

I have bicycle experience. I've rebuilt one before, and always done my own maintenance. I'm fairly mechanical as well, I just didn't know if there was a good resource for sizes of bike parts.

I don't have any parts, and I don't have a particular budget. I'm looking to do it fairly cheaply, though.

It's true that I may not do it, or that I may not finish. But I'm in the process of buying the frame at the moment. Should have it by the weekend. I don't think riding across the country is that uncommon.

I forgot to mention, I'm getting the 62 cm bike frame. It's the largest they make. About 5 years ago I got fitted at my local bike shop and that's what they said was best for me.

after you've build a new bike, as an amateur, you want to ride it for atleast a month, and do several weekend shakedown rides

to iron out the kinks on it, tune your setup, and tune the fit. You do not want to just head out the door and fix problems on the road. Physically you can suffer into bicycle shape but get your shit together with your gear and bike properly first, lets you just be free on the road rather than have all these little issues you didn't solve and setup you should have changed, but with no real recourse to proper tools or anything.

sure I hope the list at least gives you a rough idea of what a rim brake touring bike typically has.
You can go a lot cheaper on all of those if you know what to shop for. I would focus more money on rims, panniers and racks, but I'm not a touring guy at all, I just built one and had to cancel my plans. all listed parts are my favorites.
Really if you're broke I would go for a used rigid mtb. If you can find a video one you could strip it for parts and get the v brakes, derailleurs, crankset from it.

lol up your local bike co-op. if you walk in with a touring frame or just your plans and act helpless you'll might find people there very happy to help you build one cheap

certainly
it would have rolled out of the showroom with racks and panniers in many cases.
It is designed both for touring on, and being a lively fun road bike. THIS is peak, high end, versatile bike. not a rigid 90s mtb. A sport tourer. True patrician peak bike. And every single 'old timey' facet of it which breaks or proves inadequite can easily and is worth upgrading to purpose.

there aren't mid-fork bosses so you would clamp on there. Many low-rider racks are designed for clamps.
the rear has rack bosses.

It's not offensive. I think it's fun. I just think it's really selfish to go and declare without even doing so that you are buying the cadillac of touring frames, know absolutely nothing about building up a bike or bags or nutrition or even the route. It's a waste of everyone's time.

And after we'd give all that info he'd just decide not to go. Plus as anyone who has gone on a bike tour knows you'll find all these fancylads in their cinelli hobolegs and surly LHTs but you also pass just as many crazy mofos with cobbled together rigs using redneck ingenuity going 1000 miles on rail trails on a 90s stumpjumper with butterfly bars or something crazy.

I've been on backpacking trips longer than a ride across America, so I'm not new to nutrition during physical challenges. And I know the route exactly, and have maps. Chill. Just email Surly customer support and ask if they have any example builds and copy those for most components. For BB, seatset and groupset just get shit you know works well with the frame. There isn't much you will get for choosing different stuff for these. Stem, bars and other contact points you can choose yourself and they are pretty easy to figure out the right sizes for. Maybe you can choose different wheels as long as they have the size rim and axle sizing or a slightly longer/shorter crank.

With that spec sheet you already have the important stuff. Once you get the correct headset it's pretty much fit what you can find. I think the most expensive part would be the brifters. I see the prebuilt one is equipped with tektro rl520s and a bar end. I think it's probably better to get some used brifters and build according to that.
If you get 9 speed brifters or 10 speed ones that are not tiagra or grx you can use a sunrace rdm900 derraileur to get a clutched transmission.
10 speed tiagra or grx you can use grx derraileur.
another alternative is microshift advent or advent x transmission but those aren't compatible with shimano.
you'll want mini v-brakes or cantilevers if your tyres are too big for the minis.
For the love of good don't spec schawble marathons, they suck the fun of riding. Run some light 700x42 tyres

running 3x friction is also far superior.

I managed to snap the rear axle of my 70's steel roadbike with maybe 10kg of rear luggage in rear panniers.

Freewheel bearings are too close to the centre of the axle to be reliable enough for touring in my opinion. A few potholes and you might end up with a fubar wheel. It would be better to get a wheel with a cassette hub as they can handle a lot more weight.

I found no rust on the bolt, but admittedly it was probably under tension for nearly 40 years.

Another reason to go for cassette over freewheel is that trying to find low enough gearing (in combination with a compatible derailleur) can be a pain.

Lol I was once the autist OP thinking I had to have a specific touring bike hence buying this. Only toured twice in it in the 10 or so years I’ve had it lol but honestly it just does everything. I’ve built it up a million different ways so far and it does it all. Yeah there will always be a better bike but for an all rounder I’d struggle to beat this. It’s basically a 90s mountain bike but with disk brakes aka the perfect bike. It somehow absolutely shreds the trails round by my house and it takes all the abuse I give it no issue. That’s an old photo, I’ve since put a lower rise stem on and Im using ESI foam grips.

I think I’d look at something else if I was going to buy again but I don’t regret buying this.

it must be me then. I got rid of a Fuji touring disc partially because grit fell straight from the rear fender into the rear disc. not the only reason I sold it, but it was annoying
