disingenuous take imo. reviews do indeed simply review things; however. this government then decided that the facts they learned in the process of the review were satisfactory, and made the conscious choice to do nothing as a result. while hiding behind feeble 'surely the company will act in total good faith when sacking workers and replacing them on terms more favourable to the company' platitude bollocks. and, well, now, four months later, eight hundred people are told they don't have jobs any more, and that they've been replaced with immediate effect, after a three-minute pre-recorded video call

also slightly disingenuous take of my own: we never stopped child labour, as long as minimum wage varies depending on how old you are. like how a big mac costs the same however old the cook is, but a 20-year-old cook is worth £almost a big mac/hr less than someone three years older than them, doing the same work.

and, we don't put people in the workhouses any more, but everyone knows about the jobcentre benefits sanctions business. i could go on about how evil and cruel and deliberately humiliating the process is, on purpose, but, you know.

I know, it's disgusting. Replacing experienced workers with agency staff that are being paid less than minimum wage, have no sick pay, and no benefits. Imagine not being able to pay your mortgage because you suddenly lose your job at no fault of your own.

Apparently Dutch and French P&O staff have kept their jobs, and it's those with British contracts that have been sacked like this because they don't have EU protections on dismissal anymore. Brexit eh

Yes, that has always been the case in every country. But which EU regulation or EU directive that is not currently part of Brittain's national law would have protected these people from being dismissed? What is the code of the article you are refering to?

Nah, I can definetly believe France and Netherlands having better protection for their workers, but it certainly hasn't anything to do with EU laws, it's mostly a domestic affair. If you head from west europe to east you get an entirely different set of rules.

But extreme protection isn't even necessarily good for the workers. If you can't dismiss shitty workers companies are less likely to hire new people. Or they find ways around it like using agencies and temp contracts. All of which are worse for a competent worker.

Also somewhat ironically generally the countries with the best protection are also the ones with the biggest safety nets. And if you've got great safety nets from the government you wouldn't even need that massive worker protections. They're most useful when there isn't a substantial safety net from the government to fall on but usually when you don't have a lot of protections you don't have that either.

Eu “law” doesn’t function as such. It has to be transposed into national law. And a lot of the times on subjects as sensitive as this often the law isn’t exactly transposed. It mostly is a totally different law with diffferent outcomes and protections than initially done so by the eu directives or treaties, proof of that are the many trade barriers that exist between states
