Anyone ever hitch hike, ride as a stowaway, or did any other unusual transportation technique?

Ever pick up a hitch hiker, allow a stowaway, or allowed someone to ride for free?

yeah, somewhere in Montana I picked up two straight out of China college kids who were hitchhiking around America for the summer and took them to Spokane. I think it was either Missoula or Bozeman and they were just standing on a sidewalk in front of some shitty motel with their thumbs out. They looked way out of place and a lot of cars passed them so I turned around and picked em up. They were funny, they seemed scared at first but were plenty nice once we started talking. They said that nobody hitchhikes in China and America was the place where you could go hitchhiking and they just wanted to try it so they planned a whole summer around hitchhiking all over the US.

I’ve picked up two in my life. One babe in Whistler who had their bitch shields raised so far up it’s made Trumps wall look like a line in the dirt. The other was a French mountain man who just hit hiked to work and back each day. Not times it was pretty uneventful really. I’d love to try but I get worried about what happens if I need to piss. Yes I’m autistic.

Last year I worked in France a few months and hitchhiked ba shit ton. Rode with everyone, from couples to workmen, to 80yo single ladies. Met the greatest woman ever, she barely spoke any english but gave us a 40km ride and then chatted her daughter through WhatsApp to arrange us a ride back. God were French people nice.

Only time I hitched was one summer in France when we headed into town from out village and needed a loft home. We just started walking it and the first van that passed us on the country road stopped and offered us a lift. He seemed cool but my female friend, who sat in the back, noted that he had a whole box full of hammers back there. That spooked her I guess, so we made sure he didn’t know exactly where we were staying. Cool guy though.
In terms of picking up people, I Picked up a crusty dude heading to a festival in Cornwall. I was heading to Cardiff on the M4 so was like lol why not. Went past his exit by mistake and dropped him in the middle of nowhere. He said it was chill but could tell he was pissed.
Another time I picked up a Christian in France trying to do the pilgrimage to Santiago. He was chill but spoke very little French.
In general, if I drove more I would always pick up hitchhikers hoping that should I need to do it myself one day, some other kind souls would help me out.

ive craigslist rideshared a lot back in the day. do people still use it?
ive picked up a rideshare guy once and he was one of those compulsive talkers. it was all bad.
ive picked up a few hitch hikers, theyve mostly all sucked. once i had to drive 24hr home so i picked up a dirty kid to have someone to talk too and he seemed super chill and normal and then started talking about all the meth and dope he had been shooting up and i told him to get rid of his needles and he was like "sure thing, np." and was super chill the rest of the way and bought us some pot once we got into cali. ive picked up some other chill dirty kids, too

dirty kids = big travel backpack
local tweakers = small daytime backpack

I once felt some pity on a lady who seemed to be going through a crisis and needed to hitch a ride to her kid's graduation. I dropped her off at her destination 5 miles down the road and she seemed grateful. It was a risk though since that whole area is basically heroin country.

I think that's funny since I never really hear of anyone actually hitchhiking outside of movie plots, so the fact that people from other countries visit America specifically to hitchhike makes me chuckle. Hopefully they enjoyed it.

In the memoir "Hokkaido Highway Blues," he rarely has trouble getting picked up but most Japanese people say the same thing to him "You're lucky I picked you up, Japanese people don't pick up hitchhikers."
I think hitchhiking died in the USA because of the amount of people who got murdered doing it in the 1970s. Nowadays, cell phones make it hard to get away with it, but the cultural aversion remains.
