Is it safe to ride a carbon bike from the 1980s or will it blow up? Specifically a Trek road bike if that matters, not sure on the specific model (asking for someone else, not my bike)

Carbon fiber doesn't degrade over time, but adhesives do. So if you have an old carbon frame that's bonded together then those are the ones you should think twice about riding. Most bonded frames are still fine, but there's an extra point of failure there to be aware of. Also, it's a good idea to look up specific models to see if they were recalled or especially prone to failure.

Ty. How can I determine whether or not his frame is bonded? I do know it is composite (part carbon, part aluminum) but I'm not sure about bonded.

Any frame that has both carbon and aluminum parts will be bonded together. The ones that you have to worry about though are early carbon frames that copied the diamond shape of steel frames exactly and used very small diameter carbon tubes. Accordingly there's relatively little surface area and not much adhesive. Later designs from the mid -90's onwards are likely fine.
