So they make policies that one can only use a bus or get picked up by their parents at the designated area and not any other area or that kid can face punishments for breaking the rules.
Source: got detention (was referred to as "in school suspension") when they learned I had walked home when my bus driver didn't get me on the tally and then they called my mom who figured there'd be no issue when she should've said she'd picked me up.
Anyway, there are a couple of two-page spreads in my middle school yearbooks of kids who tried to cross the road. Key word: tried.
