Its always been mystifying that people wiill sign up to "serve their country" by killing a stranger over the horizon, but if they are at home the won't put service first with something that actually isnt being sucker, and actual has direct effect of making your society function.
I know transit workers must be proprotionately abused in many ways, but its the golden halo principle like with teachers, cops, and firefighters: If you pay too well, you attract people for the wrong reasons, and they will not respect the job, just leverage its critcality for more money, so when you sign up, you are inherently stating "I'm not doing this job for money, first", and management uses that to fuck you over right up to the point you won't leave, but the biggers issue is:
MASS TRANSIT HAS TO WORK
It should be thought of with church like reverence. Its the only kind of good communism I can think of. It should be thought of like the miltary, and workers should have to pass a loyal oath of some shit to do it. Every D.C. Metro worker (and bus driver) I've ever met as been a sullen, rude, some times openly hostile to the public. Get a different job. Market the job better to the get the right people, or give them the resources to do the job, so they don't hold the public hostage, when they are cleaning up a bum's greasy shit and finally break and say "This aint worth it".
