Heck, you could get them to manufacture fucking replicas and use them, ages later.
But in a Capitalist society, you buy the trainset and carriages from somebody that manifactures them, and they will eventually make new product lines.
So as time passes by, they will stop making the replacement parts as their newer designs will use slightly different part, meaning at some point you can't just buy replacements.
Alas: There is one more reason
As things age and wear, their failures is unpredictable. It might be a bearing or a joint, which is fixable by some strong hydraulic jacks and spare parts.
Or it could be engine parts, which in both cases of electricity, LNG and diesel will produce catastrophic failures. You can extend the life of the parts significantly with preventive maintenance, but it has limitations.
To putt it blunt: Its not that maintenance gets more expensive, its that more and more parts break as they near end of life.
