anything $150 higher is overpriced and gonna cost too much to maintain while barely increasing performance.
anything $150 lower is garbage for performance and safety (down tube shifters lmao)

Maintenance costs aren't determined by the value of the bike. Wtf kind of nonsense is this? A replacement chain is the same for a cheap bike a an experience, it's based on the gearing. Cables all the same price, I have a spool of jagwire for cheap or expensive it doesn't matter. Mineral oil or dot4 cost the same regardless of which brakes I bleed. This is the biggest load of bullshit I've ever heard on this board. Maintenance should only cost you your time anyway, and in that regard more expensive bikes are better because modern stuff is easier to work on them legacy gear, at least for bottom brackets, headsets, hubs and brakes. Down tube shifters and bar ends are dead simple tbf.

depends on the bike. they're shit if you're using drop bars - bringing the arm up/in to toggle the shifter is way less stable than letting it drop to the downtube. if you're using touring/north road/cruiser bars, it's trivial to move the hand from grip to stem, so stem shifters are more comfy here.

I rode Claris before switching to latest gen Ultegra, and I can agree that Claris isn't as bad as its reputation. And yes, you need gears to pedal efficiently, that's why 1x drivetrains are fake and gay.

Claris and Sora reputation is tarnished by the old gen with the thumb shifter button. The new R2000 and R3000 ones are quite decent, if the shifter came in hydro version I wouldn't complain. 9 speed is plenty for grabble, the range is the same as 11 speed GRX

I'll concede older shit is cheaper but as I said it's more of a pain in the ass to with with. I fucking love not having to fuck with a front derailleur. My time is valuable, north of 50/hour, and if you take that into account things start to break even. Don't get me wrong, it's a hobby and I like fixing up old stuff and restoring it to former glory and all that, but you have to admit it's a pain in the ass most of the time. Square cranks suck. Canti breaks suck. Lose bearings suck. Etc etc. Changing head sets and bottom brackets on newer bike it's way better. The contrarian retro grouch shit died right after the fixie fad, go check your fax machines.

nice road bikes older than 5 years get sold because they're completely clapped out. The owners of those bikes actually ride them. I think they're even more likely to need a full new drivetrain than some worse looking 30 year old shitter.

There's plenty of Fred sleds that are purchased and spend their entire life sitting in a garage until an angry housewife sells it at a yard sale or something. I worked at a bike shop in college and I would say the majority of the bikes sold, regardless of cost, went to people making the equivalent of a new years eve resolution purchase who would ride them one or twice and then never again.

8 speed chains generally are much cheaper than 11 speed chains.

105 level is actually at the cheaper end.
