Explain to me why the US shouldn't construct a transcontinental canalway.
>carries a shit ton of stuff with no moving parts

I wish we had more canals. My town long ago had myriad stream and rivers all through it, would have been amazing to use them for transport, but instead they put at grade bridges all over the place and turned them into glorified ditches. Bastards. Not even navigable by fucking kayak anymore.

Of that 650 million roughly 600 million was used for the two ends of the canal. So the cost can't just be linearly extrapolated like that.

if you want to make the canal suitable for panamax you need to respect a height of 60 meters, a width of 50 meters and a depth of 20 meters so gl finding a tunnel boring machine with at least 100 meter diameter

take a look at a map, you just use the Great Lakes to go over them. expand the Erie Canal and use the Hudson to do the rest. ez pz.

Similarly you just dredge out the Missouri all the way to the Mississippi, from there the Mississippi and Illinois river are already pretty well set up for big ships and it wouldn't take too much work to expand the canal system in Chicago. Saves a lot of money.

The tricky part is getting from the Columbia River to the headwaters of the navigable Missouri. Just looking at the map the best way (seemingly) to do that would be dredging out the Spokane and Clark Fork (monumental undertaking on the latter, colossal environmental impact), canaling from the Clark Fork to Flathead Lake and then just burrowing the mother of all tunnels through the continental divide near that area.

It would be fucking hilarious and a total meme. The environmental damage would be cataclysmic. I'm all for it.

come from the south. up the colordado river from yuma to kingman, then cut across north of flagstaff, over to Albuquerque. from there it's a straight shot to wherever you want to go, great lakes, mississippi, etc.

We'd obviously have to flood out more of the rivers or build some auxiliary routes, but yeah, there is a lot to work with.

What logistical challenges would there be in flooding portions of the Grand Canyon and turning it into the Port of Arizona?

I visited historic Natchez MS last year and as the tour guide took us down Canal Street he informed us that it was literally a canal until it was filled in and made a road. Then I looked it up and Canal St is basically the same in every city. They were once canals for moving goods around river towns

Also, it's only cheap infrastructure if you were dealing with a flat area with roughly the same elevation (say, the Suez Canal), which the U.S. is definitely not.
