The cost of gasoline is a concern but more often than not it is the issue with parking and traffic that takes over a city.
I live in a particular permissive country when it comes to parking the sidewalks are covered with cars and you literally can't use them. The city and government dont handle the problem if anything the problem is exharcebated by a sense of entitlement like parking your car in front of the door of the place you're going even when parking is available.
but getting back to your point. public transport directly serves the richest in the society by being available and subsidised, usually by the entire country even though only most affluent will actually have access to it and still choose not to because it is littered by those who are unwanted, the literally unwashed masses.
but you got to live somewhere and you got to work somewhere, at the point where we are now where rents are I wonder if it doesnt just make more sense, depending on the individual, to move to the midwest if youre in the usa, or the country side if you're in europe or literally anywhere else.
