Since you sound like an urbanist, you’ve probably never lived in an actual community before, but the whole point of a community is that you live surrounded by like minded individuals that are all seeking out a similar way of life. That’s why you all ended up there in the first place, because you liked the way it was when you moved in. Different communities have different priorities, so you’re free to choose ones that best suit your preferences.
In terms of this particular example, there is going to be a massive change in everyone who lives there’s way of life, and they had zero say in the matter- it’s like spending 30 minutes making the perfect sub in your kitchen then right as you’re about to take a bite your friend puts gummy worms in it and says “sorry, you have to eat it now because I wanted to put gunmy worms in it, but I’m not gonna actually eat it, you still have to eat it”.
The people building this just make money off of it. They don’t live there. They don’t give a shit about the people that do, they just want zeroes and commas, and there’s no other effect on their life. Meanwhile the people that do live there undergo a massive change in their lifestyle and see their neighborhood flooded with tens of thousands more people with different priorities, and suddenly it’s not a community at all anymore.
It’s the same mindset with the children sewing our sneakers, we don’t care about their human rights because we don’t have to see them and live near them and see the consequences of our actions, we just want sneakers.
