I was hiking the other day, and I saw a 250+ lbs fat guy riding a mountain e-bike up a steep hill. His bike kicked up a ton of dirt and left tire marks an inch deep in the process. There are a lot of people riding MTB on this trail, yet I've never seen tire marks this deep before.

Basically, I think e-MTBs should be banned from trails that don't allow motor vehicles such as dirt bikes. Thanks for reading my blog.

I'm fine with pedal assist ones that don't produce significantly more power than a strong rider would, especially for women to use, but anything with a throttle should be considered a motor vehicle

correct but you can get used to muscleing it around which kinda negates the idea that e bikes are for people that don't want to do anything. For extreme trails yeah you probably don't want an e bike but e bikers probably aren't interested in being extreme at least not right away.

well in theory nothing but take any person at any fitness level. They will go further on an e bike. How physically fit you are is entirely dependant on you anyway. You could also ride with less effort or faster with the same effort. The amount of calories you burn is up to you.
OP's fatass will lose weight eventually and there will be one less fat person in the world. OP would rather more people be fat because he feels an irrational need to seethe at ebikes.

you see the same thing on MUPs. E-bike boomers zooming along at roadie speed and you just know they do not have the bike handling to do shit if they need to.

The most valid niche for e-bikes, by far, is making low-intensity commuting viable for unfit/old people especially in hilly places, or over longish distances. Too often they just allow noobs to ride beyond their ability.

I can get onboard with people who are just being reckless and having fun with high powered e-bikes in the same way as i can with people hooning modified cars. Sure it's fun, it's also stupid and anti-social. I'm not against it persay but it's not legitimate either.

I think e-bikes are on the whole, good, but there are definitely problems with them.

Those problems bear discussion because as an emerging technology what they are, and how/where they're used is being discovered. Also, to combat people who say e-bikes are unequivocally superior to bicycles.

I see the point of classifying by throttle obviously, like most people, but also recognize that if this becomes legality (moreso than type 2 mtb which doesn’t even really exist) that “pedal assist” is basically just a throttle that’s mounted to your power meter and has no regulations on activation curves. You could make a “pedal assist” ebike where full power kicks in immediately when you step on the pedals
I see why having a throttle should be a logical barrier between ebikes and emoto but I also feel like it’s a trivial distinction when “pedal assist” can be a foot-controlled throttle

Really I want to say that I'm against a vehicle with any sort of motor being considered the same as a human powered vehicle, but I also know women who are fairly serious cyclists who also use an evike when going on rides with men because it helps them keep pace and go a bit further, and I think that sort of ebike use is 100% legitimate. They also are very useful for commuting or for utility use. I am a pretty big bike snob but I would still totally get an electric cargo bike if I had space for one. Mainly I just wish people would be more responsible, I've seen a bunch of crashes on ebikes that were going way too fast with riders who clearly had 0 handling skills

As an ebiker, I do agree with most of the sentiment in this thread. People just need to respect the fucking trails. Id hate to see ebikes banned from any parks, but so many people I see out in ebikes clearly were not into MTB before they got eMTBs and have absolutely terrible trail etiquette. It used to be that the further away from shuttled sections of park you would go, there would be less and less noob riders. Not the case now, ebikes allow idiot riders way out the back of the park to previously un-fucked trails.

This is how it is in my country (UK).
Bicycles are legally the same as horses so can go on any bridleway, however this only applies to pedal bicycles or pedal-assist e-bikes that are power limited to what a fit cyclist could do on a regular pedal bike. This is defined as a max power of 250W and a max speed of 15mph (if you pedal the bike faster than this then the motor has to cut out)

If you have an e-bike above this power level then you can only ride on routes where it would be legal to ride a dirt bike.

No big mountains where I live, but plenty of good hoppy innawoods terrain. Still waiting for snow to melt from the trails though, got to design and print an additional battery bracket. Just ordered a smaller front chainwheel and a complete gearset for 42t rear for maximum uphill torq. Currently the bike is only good for commuting and curb hopping. Additionally, due to grounds freezing here, you won't be buying any bike without suspension unless you're hitting a velodrome.

Fuck paying 5500€ for a 25km/h limited bike just so I can casualfag the trails around my house. And yes, I am a casualfag, people who take biking to heart are annoying as fuck.

Well then your point falls apart, since you can do whatever you like on private land, so long as the owner is ok with it. This could include riding a motorbike on a footpath or bridleway, if you ask them first and they say it's ok.

In the UK you have a legal right to ride a horse or bicycle on any bridleway, even on private land the owner cannot stop you if it has been designated as a bridleway. The same right applies to an e bike below 200W/15mph. Above this threshold you basically have the same rights as a dirt bike which mostly means none at all unless you have permission of the land owner or a designated area.

I can tell by your bike that you aren't one of those people. No matter how many parts you unbolt from that bike, you'll never take it down anything more serious than a grade 3 trail without realising that its totally the wrong bike for that type of riding.

Seriously, if you had posted a pic of a trek rail and said you had hacked it and given it more torque to tear up trails, you might start to see some hate, but I can tell just by looking at that bike that you aren't going to be damaging any trails that actual MTBers use.
