But transit twatter said you don't need gears or a bike that weighs less than 50 pounds. They wouldn't lie to me would they? Next you'll say that since there weren't any protected bike lanes it was impossible to ride a bike until mynheer peeperkorn parachutes out of the sky and builds you a special lane connecting your home to your place of work/study.

Me too!
I will say though the hills are probably fine, just get a real bike that can handle it. I live in one of the "cities" of upstate and everywhere is steep hills you just have to get strong by getting used to going up steep inclines. This is the perfect place for cycling!
