If you count 15 minutes walking time in total to go from home to the bus station and from the bus station to the office that leaves 20 minutes for the bus/train ride which is very short.
There's some times that you juste can't compress due to the very nature of mass transit. The mean of transportation that is perfectly tailored to everybody's commute is called the car, and we all know it would be much much worse if the 4M people employed in NYC commuted by car.
