I just replace the tube during the ride and spend the time to patch it when I'm back at the house. Then the patched tube goes back in the saddlebag.

I've noticed that a well patched tube is as strong or stronger than the original. I'm running a conti tube from 2020 that's got 2 patches and thousands of miles. I like to replace the tubes when I replace the tires I know that's kind of consoomer but if Im putting new on I'm going to put all new on.

It's very frequent for cyclists to have more than 2 patches on a tube. My rear tube has 5 patches.

I've had a tube with like 8 patches on it and it still held air, no slow leaks or anything. My current front tube is old enough to start to dry rot, there's like 4 or 5 patches on it right now but every once in a while the dry rot causes a tear in the tube that I have to patch.

I noticed pre glued patches often slow leak or fail more often than patches that need the vulcanizing fluid. None of my properly patched tubes using the vulcanizing cement fail like the pre glued patches, preglued patches are garbage.

Yeah I wasted 15 mins patching my tube this week, was all great when I was pumping it up, come back an hour later and the tire is flat again. Turns out air was also leaking through the valve and I ain't soldering that piece of shit shut. Goddamn I hate Presta valves so goddamn much.

Anyway thanks for reading my blog and yeah I'll keep spending € 2 for a new tire everytime. A box of 10 patches costs 12 fucking euros so it's not like you're saving much money for the hassle.

The top part (valve core) screws in and out, there should be flat areas on the side to use to grip it with a wrench or whatever. Every new tube I ever buy the first thing I do is make sure it's tight. Returned a bunch of tubes back in the day when I was a retard who didn't know about that and thought they were all just defective.

It's pretty common but it really shouldn't be.
With wider rims being the norm, all valves should switch to Schrader. It's just better.

That being said because it's so common, there isn't much to "worry" about. Most bike stuff is presta equiped

If your question is if you should go out of your way to use it, NO definitely not. If anything avoid it if most of your kit is Schrader. But ultimately it doesn't matter much.

Continental installs their presta valve cores very loosely. I always have to tighten them up after pulling them out of the box. I see a lot of reviews online where people bought a tube then the valve core came out when they were unscrewing their pump.

6mm isn't small enough to be worth its own valve stem, vs the 8mm for Dunlop/Schrader.
It still leaks for the same reason the other two leaks: Loose valve core installation
Requires special tools and adapters to even inflate.

You can get a metal screw top can with a brush attached to the lid. Most general hardware / automotive stores should carry it. Lasts for years.

I use that for patching at home. I save the little tubes of glue as a backup in case I get more flats than tubes I'm carrying. The little metal tubes of glue dry out quickly once opened.

I do and it's pretty great. Drawback is it's annoying to clean the rubber scum off everything (like if a blowout doesn't seal right away). Also I'm a little skeptical that non-vulcanized tires are safe to run tubeless, I used to do it and stress about it, but since I went back to NPC normie tires my stress levels have gone down. So that's kinda sad but the people who make those things say it's perfectly safe so if you believe them then there's no real disadvantage.

I think nuvinci hubs are pretty nice for what they're used for (short distance, not much climbing, not much speed). I've probably got 600-800 miles on them, is that enough for you? Never had to maintain one. Maybe that would make me hate them.

These patch kits have the best sandpaper. It's laminated to a 1.5mm sheet of butyl rubber, so it doesn't crease.

I also have one of these little green cases propping up my sagging GPU. It just happened to be the right size.

Get a can of vulcanizing rubber cement. It’s the bees knees. It has sulphuric to vulcanize (ie break the rubber bonds) to give the new patch a better hold than just cement alone

if you were running a small bike shop it would take maybe a year or two to use it all
many customers just buy a new tube by the time they are into a third puncture repair

Patch, inflate, leave for a day, see if it holds. Optionally, take out the new one and insert the patched one, take the new one as a spare. Pretty foolproof.

I keep these on my winter commuter. Some people bitch about "muh ride quality", but fuck changing a tube when it's 20F. Where I am, it's rare that you can ride fast in the winter anyway.

Sometimes I'll use a seal pick to dig out stuff that gets stuck in the rubber, but doesn't penetrate fully. The wildest thing is glass. It will stab into the rubber, then fracture as you ride on, and over time the continual flexing of the rubber will grind the shards into tiny glass balls. That's a lot of what I pick out.

Wait til you discover tubeless. Went from 3-5 punctures per ride to 0 per ride, instantly and permanently. Cost me about $60 a wheel including new tyres. Could probably do it for under 5 per wheel if you were doing several at once and not buying new tyres.

You can do that. Just make sure you wash the diy patch (get all of the dust off).
Compared to a manufactured patch, the diy one is going to be thicker/less flexible, and it won't have tapered edges.

Rubber cement is not glue, you should leave it to dry more. It should be matte and non-sticky when you apply the patch, otherwise it doesn't vulcanize adequately.

Should be able to find stuff on Amazon or ebay. I got a box of 100 Rema F1 patches which will probably last me 10 years. There are probably cheaper options but I'd rather not end up with some no name brand where the Chinese manufacture couldn't be bothered to clean off the mold release agent.
