Lets face it, bicycles in general are too over-geared. The vast majority of people don't need their top gears. What they do lack severely however are proper low gears. I see way to many people riding uphill or battling headwinds mashing their gears because they can't get low enough. Meanwhile I just spin by them effortlessly with my 90rpm because I got the right gearing to tackle those winds and hills.

Not being able to spin up is MUCH worse then spinning out downhill, yet the majority of groupsets are made to prevent the latter and not the former. Not being able to spin uphill is
actually detrimental to your health and energy, while spinning out is just a trivial 1st world problem. Who cares if you spin out down hill, you don't have to put in any effort to coast and you will keep going anyways.
