There are obviously going to be costs and restrictions that inadvertently affect you, who needs to use a car, and who society accepts needs to use a car, ones focused on disincentivising car use.

You have to just deal with it, and you'll probably pass on the cost anyway. Everybodies lives will be negatively impacted in some ways by all of this.

A 2000 model Ford Transit gets 23.83mpg

Gas is about $5 per gallon in the US right?
Adjusted for inflation gas was $2 per gallon in 2000.

So the plug in hybrid is CHEAPER on gas than the same model was in 2000.

It solves several of the problems with power generation.

With a coal power plant you can put it next to a city, so you don't need a large power grid across the country, and you can run it when you need energy.

But a solar, wind, geothermal, hydro etc, has to be in a specific place, typically an isolated place, and it generates energy sporadically. Those power plants can produce hydrogen when there is surplus energy, and the hydrogen can be used elsewhere without building the grid up.

It does make sense. I already explained why. Hydrogen generation is used like a battery when electricity generation from renewable sources is greater than the demand from the grid (especially with generation in remote locations with a poor grid).

That's a frequent situation with renewable energy generation. The alternatives are stuff like smelting aluminium then.

Let me clarify though. It's not going to take over from petrol in letting everyone drive whenever they want. It's not going to be ubiquitous.

You're not wrong but it's kind of a non-sequitur

Pumped hydro, compressed air, thermals, and flywheel all require that grid. They're for feeding energy into that grid. Inadequate grid and locations of generation are some of the largest problems with renewable energy. I already discussed this. And those have their own complications like: can you create a fucking huge lake high up somewhere etc.

The other energy storage methods are all batteries which require their own scarce resources to create. That's extremely problematic.
