I live in an American suburban sprawl (100k people in a 10 mile area) and I want to be more conscious about transportation. I'm in a residential zoned area and the nearest grocery store is 3 miles from my house. My city is adding a ton of bike lanes, but I'm afraid to walk to the Chinese restaurant one block over because my neighbor hoods has a lot of black people and has drug addicts stumbling down the sidewalks like zombies. This is so bad that a few weeks ago, I was driving just a block from my house and saw a druggie collapse into a bush behind the gas station.
I want to live in a better America and decrease my dependence on cars, but I don't know how to do it in my current environment. Moving isn't an option for at least another year.
