I finally got good enough with the faux aero bars position to use it on pretty rough terrain. Feels noticeably faster and it's really nice to take the weight off my forearms on a longer ride. Still get very sketched out doing it on any kind of downhill or in strong crosswind.

I feel like there's a lot of nuance. I used to be very good at it on my old mtb beater, but my twitchy road bike is much harder to keep steady (or my confidence disappeared)

I don't have experience with road bikes, but what works for me is letting my arms hang loose and wiggle as a balancing weight (similar to how some skyscrapers in earthquake regions have weight pendulums suspended in them) and doing minor steering through hip movements, not entire upper body movements.

I've been getting much better at descending steep offroad inclines (on my road bike). something clicked in my head that I'm not pushing my body back and up, but rather I'm pushing my bike forward and down, while keeping my body straight. maybe it's really obvious for MTBers but for the first time it made sense to me and now I'm much more confident going down steep shit.
also it's really fun on slick skinny tires

This winter I have had at least 3 situations where a normal person would have slipped on ice, but I pulled some crazy recovery maneuvers.

One was a fixie-style skid behind a truck taking a hard right.
Another omr as just ice bumps in ride, kicked the rear of my bike out. I put my foot down and spun in a full 360 and didn't fall.

I don't know that third for sure I guess I just had healthy recovery on ice and shit lol. It was a fun winter!

All the same, have been often doing this since I'm a kid, and to me it's like a "relaxed second hand position" when riding. Also it's quite fun to take slight turns by leaning on one side

And I never managed to wheelie, although I never really tried

Not him, but riding on ice is all about managing your center of gravity and being smooth on the pedals to keep your rear wheel moving at a consistent rate. That's the one good thing about riding on ice, it will force you to learn to be smooth and steady on the bike and be aware of your center of gravity - a couple times that skill has helped me avoid crashing when cornering on slick or sandy pavement.
