Apparently bikes that use a Surly pressfit bottom bracket require a Surly bb, there is no other bb by any other brand that works. Is this even real? If someone gets a Surly bike that requires a Surly bb, and Surly stops making bbs, then the bike is worthless as soon as the bb needs replacement? Or is there some other option?

Which frame OP? If you have a Pugsley like your picture, a quick google search for the Pugsley says that those have 100mm wide shells that are either English-threaded (the most common thread type) or have a 41mm diameter for a pressfit BB (the most common pressfit type). Either way there's nothing particularly weird or uncommon about either, and even if the Surly -branded BBs become unavailable in the future, the only thing that's really unique about them is the width of the center sleeve, and if you had to there's a good chance that you could substitute alternate cups and just reuse that sleeve. So to your question, there's no reason to panic.

OP here, I don't have a Surly bike now but I may get one at some point. Some of their older fat bikes had pressfit Surly bottom brackets and a web search suggested that no non-Surly bb will work. They have moved over to 100mm threaded for current production frames, but if I buy used (poorfag) then I may end up with an older year model that requires a Surly pressfit, hence why I am wondering.
Regarding just the cups not the sleeves, will all brands of 41mm pressfit be cross compatible with all frames that require 41mm pressfit?
And regarding the sleeves, let's say I did need a new sleeve in some obscure size.. would I be out of luck if Surly doesn't make them anymore?

I would expect the sleeve in the middle to be plastic. As for fitting with other cups (like an ordinary Shimano/SRAM BB, no way to know short of testing but I think you'd be likely to find a good match. Or yes, you could just run the appropriate BB without a sleeve.

Just to be sure, the 'no way of knowing without testing' was referring to the sleeve working with the cups, NOT referring to the frame; other brand pf41 will definitely work with frame, correct?

You got it - whether the frame is threaded or takes a pressfit BB is something you can obviously tell just by looking to see whether or not there are splines for attaching a tool to thread the cups in and out or not.

the center sleeve is probably just a piece of plastic with a loose fit with rubber o-rings to keep water/dirt out, you just need the right replacement bearings and any bearing puller/press

dutch grannies ride a few km on a perfectly flat surface and they're absolutely miserable, they're barely above a pedestrian in their road presence, they preemptively come to a stop ahead of a junction (which to be fair has unreasonably poor visibility because of overgrown hedges) because their brakes and handling isn't good enough in case a car will cross

european cities have shorter streets so you're always accelerating and decelerating and changing directions. you have to keep the speed down to compensate for the worse braking and it feels sketchy etc and there's always elevation changes even if it's just a percent or two

you're arguing just to argue, you're not helping OP, it's a nonsense theoretical argument, in the context of road bikes you're doing long rural rides, not starting and stopping in cities, and the argument is meant to be that a few hundred grams or a kilogram doesn't make such a huge difference that it's worth it in most cases to sacrifice aero or paying thousands of dollars, but with a 20kg dutch bike it's a full retard type of situation, the weight is very fucking significant

Why isn't your own weight more important and talked about instead?

Like me i'm 100kg + bicycle 12kg that's 112 kilos to move around, bike is like 10% of total weight.
So what's a few kg lighter bike gonna do for me?

Anon you should try being vegan or something. But anyway yes losing weight and getting healthy is more important than having a lighter bike, but having a 5kg lighter bike is a pretty significant difference especially on long rides.
