A single electric motor isn't going to generate as much power as a single jet engine on 777
So you need more of those motors.
Proposed electric planes from actually serious companies also have many motors.
Another bonus for more motors is you don't need as much redundancies.
With a twin jet, you need to ensure your plane can still work even if one engine is out, so that they can land at nearest diversion airport. This is 100% redundant power. Yet most planes nowadays use only two engines because it is more efficient this way, ref A340 vs A330. However, this efficiency advantage of fewer number of larger engines wouldn't austain for electric motor, and then it would make sense to use larger number of smaller motors to propell the aircraft.
