Amtrak uses them as cab cars occasionally and I believe Cal Train has a few still in service and I know VIA has them in regular long distance use still.

Spartan cabs had the same width as the long hood. Beginning in the 80s there was a push to improve crew safety and the wider safety cabs started to gain a position in the marketplace. I believe they're mandatory on new locomotives now.

You might say that wide cabs have somewhat lower visibility than the old spartan cabs because of blind spots directly ahead of the locomotive. The wide cabs just put way more metal between the crew and anything the locomotive might collide with
