I don't know how they would have dealt with the range limitations, obviously launching anything in the vicinity at supersonic speed was outside their effective understanding so drop tanks would have been problematic too.
But, my point was that the engines and aerodynamics on the SR-71 were more optimized for that flight condition. It's like the budget economy version of the XB-70, which is absurd.
