I recently taught myself how to ride a bike and am planning on using it as my work commute within the next couple of months. What are some things I should know beforehand?

Unless you're using an e-bike or you're able to run 1-2 km at a time, there's not much point in trying to bike commute just yet.
Going from 0 to riding will really show you how unfit you are. Make sure you can comfortably do a few km at a time without totally losing breath. You're going to enjoy getting to your destination and be gasping for air and dripping sweat.

Specially if you live somewhere with many hilly areas. I've seen people who think they're pretty fit and end up shitting their pants on the streets because they can't pace themselves. So the main thing is: remember to keep up a pace, and if you don't have a place to shower when you get to work, go full granny on ascents.

Carry a spare tube and everything you need to change it. Be able to do maintenance, at least cleaning a chain and adjusting a derailleur. Fenders are a must IMO.
