General question: how bad are bike salesmen at being salesmen?
Went to a bike store to enquire about a touring/gravel/all road bike (kinda like a Surly Ogre).
They lead me to their line of Specialized bikes, many of which were about £2k.
Specialized are pricey, but I kept asking about customisation options, such as going with flat bars instead of drops or even picking a specific groupset for hill climbing.
This boomer salesman told me that:
A. No one will want to fix a bike that isn't a Specialized/Giant "what if the frame bends or cracks?"
B. "The frameset is everything", and
C. "You *want* drop bars"
I responded to the first point with "well, any qualified, experienced bike mechanic should be able to do most tasks" which got an eye roll and the second point with "I've researched products in depth".
I also got told that it's "impossible to find groupsets", even though I can easily buy them from the bigger retailers.
I also kept being told that carbon frames are better, and I just said that I'm only interested in aluminium or steel.
