Only 800 or so cyclists die each year in the US. Contrast that with 38,000 motor vehicle fatalities last year. Its typically around 32,000.

So the question is, how much do motorists worry about dying out on the roads. Seems like not enough.

One other thing. Between 350,000 and 600,000 Muricans die each year from obesity and related illnesses. So the reality is its the couch potatoes that should be worried. Couches and donuts are 500x more dangerous than cycling in traffic.

Not to pick on my fellow Americans specifically. Many developed countries have an obesity epidemic going on.

Crazy that in 2020 in the US 670 people died cycling while in the Netherlands nearly 250 people died while cycling. I though the gap would be a lot greater

50mph suburban expressways are scary as fuck, especially when the sidewalk and shoulder ends are covered in goat heats.
rural roads/highways even scarier

also i swear my spatial awareness has gotten worse in the past few years becuase i would always just glance both ways in under a second and be clear to run a red, now i find myself scanning each direction for multiple seconds and still not feeling the area is clear enough to run the red

last time i had a kid/adult yell at me "aye, lemme ride yo bike" was like 10+ years ago and i just kept pedaling and they went on with their day

The odd times I've thought about dying on a bike have always been while bombing really gnarly hills, but that's rare.
I think a lot more about it while caging. Like during highway nighttime driving on mountain roads, or on undivided highways (seen too many Russian dashcam videos). The most I thought about it has always been on a motorcycle, on the highway - which is to say, almost all the time while doing that.
