Imagine how awesome it would feel to have your own little pedal aircraft that you could use to fly a few meters off the ground around the countryside. Too bad about that wingspan; I suppose that alone makes this a very impractical device, but it makes me wonder what engineers could do with modern advances in material science.

Reminds me of hydrocycles. I wish they were more popular and more refined because they seem like the ultimate idea for an affordable personal boat.

What about...

BLIMP TRAIN BIKES.

You pedal on the blimp throug a dinamo.
THe elctricity goes to the train.
Even with wind you still get pulled in the right direction and you enjoy the scenery.

I'm not athletic enough to fly a flying bike.
I do, however, wish there were tools to let bikes or scooters do short glides or hops. I'd love to get over canals that way.

Very little actually. Daedalus was already constructed with the wings being supported by long carbon fiber rods and covered in thin mylar material. You could shave very little weight off the basic design. The main problem as others pointed out is you're working as hard as you can to even stay in level flight, you have nothing in reserve to fight the wind. You also have to be able to put out 200 watts just to get off the ground, 280watts to actually fly the thing.
P.s. pedal powered boats are always shit because of the bobbing pedaling induces in any boat small enough to be pedal powered.

Now how many of those guys have 6 figures to spend on a rickety "airplane" with a do not exceed speed of 21mph that can only be flown on still days with no passenger? For maybe a few hours at a time?
Human powered flight is going to unfortunately remain an university engineering competition gimmick until we have colonies on the moon/mars or we get serious about genetic engineering people.

Oh god yes PLEASE, I want a grandpa who is "in the best shape of his life!" foot to slip off the pedal for a second so he can panic and flatspin two thousand feet to the ground, hollering and crying the entire way.
