Walmart hybrid bike or one from a real bike shop?

My price range is at least around $500. I haven’t ridden a bike since graduating high school, but I want to get back into doing it for exercise and mental health. I could just say screw it and buy a Walmart bike but I hear they’re pretty terrible. What does /n/ say?

the worst thing about department store bikes is they're badly assembled, in the factory and in the store. So don't buy one unless you have some mechanical acumen and tools and willingness to service and adjust it from new. It's not that hard even if you know nothing about bikes but you do have to learn some stuff and try.

Aside from that, on low-end bikes try to get one that's the simplest, so that means no suspension and preferably rim brakes over disc.

get a ridged frame 80's mountain bike off craigslist
they went for about $80 used bucks 7 years go so theyre probably still $80 used
try and find out what your size is and try to pick an appropriate size bike
buy a set slick tires for them so you go about %20 faster for the same amount of effort
>protip, you can buy tires at the bum camps for like $5 a pop and you can haggle even lower.

Be wary. My personal experience says that cheap single speed Kent is a piece of shit. I replaced it with the “Hyper Urban” 8-speed they sell (since my budget is non-existent and I gave it a full once over) and it’s all around a much better bike.

I went back and watched this old video a certain computer hardware channel (Gamer's Nexus) did on branded bike (AMD) that was sold as special fan/collector's merch. $350 or so, and surprise surprise, it was also a Kent. Granted it was sold as a modern full suspension mountain bike and those are far more complex need way more engineering than a fixie. Glad the other bike is working out better for you without blowing the budget, I remember you from the previous thread.

Starting at $80 for a rusted to shit piece of junk that """"only needs indexing"""", going up to $400 for good condition with all bearings serviced etc.

Few years ago when I got into commuting I bought my first bike in my adult life.
I ended up with a Granville Toronto 7. I think the bike was a solid choice. Its been going 40+ km almost every single day for a bit more than two years now. Needed tires, needed brake pads on the front. Somehow, probably from mishandling, the leads got ripped out of the dynamo and Ive been to lazy to fix. Only additions I have made is a water bottle carrier and stronger pedals with clips. If I knew back then I wouldnt have gone for a bike with cheap front suspension. There is no need for it and the cheap thing seems to have little effect, while still managing to suck your energy when you boot it, creaking while bouncing up and down like a pogo stick making a fool out of your efforts.

Gearing seemed tall at first, which quickly changed to appear quite the opposite.

Last issue would be the kickstand. It flexes and is barely up to the task, on any incline you have to orient the bike such that it will lean into the incline to give it a fighting chance to stand. Put a panier bag or any cargo on the bike and it will topple.

I feel kinda dumb having said I learned my lesson then going back and buying another Walmart bike but the frame on this one at least seems like it will allow me to upgrade things little by little as parts break/I get better.

Keep in mind that the last two years has seen a bit of a spike in used bike prices which should be receeding since the supply crunch has been easing since January. So be wary of price gouging as its still going on.
