What can I, as an average person in a mid size American city, do you get my local government to build more Missing Middle housing?

Show up to local council meetings and public consultations and express support for higher density projects and oppose new zoning ordinances.

They probably wouldn't be dicks about it. Worst case scenario they may just ignore you and do whatever they want to anyway, which is typically how local governments do things.

There are plenty of "missing middle" housing, apartment complexes and sometimes rows of townhouses and fourplexes. My own town's extremely suburban nature has all sorts of non single-family housing but most of what's there is really run down and the worst parts of town.
